New James Bond film gets five-star Vatican blessing

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - If anyone thinks the Vatican newspaper is still a staid broadsheet that publishes only religious news and harsh papal edicts, consider this: On Tuesday it ran not one but five articles about the new James Bond film.

"Skyfall" gets a rave review in l'Osservatore Romano, which calls it one of the best of the 23 James Bond films made over the past 50 years.

In the main article, titled "007 License to Cry," the newspaper says the latest incarnation of the world's most famous spy is a rather good one because it makes him less of a clich?, and "more human, capable of being moved and of crying: in a word, more real".

A second article compares the different actors who have played James Bond, from the original Sean Connery to the current Daniel Craig.

In an interview with the newspaper, Craig says he feels "very different" from the actors who have preceded him in playing Bond but does concede that Connery is "a point of reference".

Another article explains why author Ian Fleming chose the name James Bond for his hero (Fleming wanted an ordinary sounding name), and the fifth article analyses the various soundtracks composed for the 23 films.

The Bond splash shows just how much the newspaper has changed.

Since taking it over in 2007, editor-in-chief Gian Maria Vian has slowly transformed it from a newspaper critics said could compete with sleeping pills to one that follows current events, trends and show business as well as Church business.

Pope Benedict gave Vian a mandate to rejuvenate the 151-year-old mouthpiece of the Holy See when he appointed him.

Other changes have included more articles by women, more international cover, a reader-friendly layout and typeface.

The newspaper has come a long way from the time its austere nature led some to call it the "Catholic Pravda," a reference to the communist party organ in the former Soviet Union.

It's a safe bet that when the second James Bond film, "From Russia with Love," came out in 1963, the Catholic Church either ignored it or, more likely, condemned it as it did Federico Fellini's classic "La Dolce Vita" in 1960.

But James Bond has changed with the times and so has the Vatican newspaper.

Its influence is disproportionate to its tiny print circulation of just 15,000, which is smaller than that of some American university dailies.

An editorial reflecting the Vatican's position on something quickly reverberates around the world when it is picked up by the mainstream media.

It gets tens of thousands of hits on its internet site each day, which it publishes in seven languages, and recently it started publishing a monthly edition written exclusively by women.

Speaking of women, the newspaper also praises the character "M", the female head of MI6 in the latest Bond film.

It says "M," played by Judi Dench, shows the "the fragility of a woman who hides behind the cold mask of the boss of the powerful MI6, rendering her less distant and more appealing".

Grimes: CARB tightens regs, partners with cops

The yo-yo?s running the State are diligently working to come up with a new tax.? CARB is the California Air Resources Board.

?The more disturbing part of the presentation was that the CARB staff was very excited about all of the data that can be collected from a car?s onboard computer. It?s not just about the smog.

CARB Board member Daniel Sperling suggested that drivers should be taxed on the smog they produce. ?Has there been any thought given to basic economic principles to just charge drivers for their emissions?? Sperling asked. ?Economists have talked about this for decades.?

This launched CARB staff members into a discussion with board members about the ?incentives? they?ve tried to impose for years to encourage people to get rid of older cars.

?I think that if we?ve had a hard time convincing the public of a carbon tax, not sure a tax is a good idea,? said CARB Board member James Balmes.?

You should know they have mandated new equipment for the smog check that would allow them to tax you car!? We have a fire tax, Chicago is going to have an ammunition tax?and you will pay a carbon for your drive to the unemployment and welfare offices.

CARB tightens regs, partners with cops

By Katy Grimes, Calwatchdog, 10/19/12

SACRAMENTO ? The monthly meeting of the California Air Resources Board on Thursday was nothing more than a mutual admiration society and big tax-and-spend club. After board members shared esteem for one another and CARB staff, several members of the audience jumped in to grovel before the board, instead of showing fear of the omniscient state agency.

The self-congratulatory tone at the final board meeting before the November?California Cap-and-Trade Program Greenhouse Gas?Allowance Auction?should have been enough to make even the most hardened bureaucrat wince, but instead, the agenda did that.

Help us!

Earlier in the week, the AB 32 Implementation Group delivered a letter to Gov. Jerry Brown advocating policies to achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions to meet AB 32 goals in a manner that will protect jobs and the economy.??They said they were disappointed that CARB has not made very necessary repairs to the Cap and Trade program before the November cap-and-trade auction of allowances, and asked Brown to step in to exercise his authority under AB 32.

Part of the self-congratulatory tone from CARB board members is because they have made it right up to the November Cap and Trade auction without having to address the concerns of the public, employers, taxpayers, manufacturers and other industries, who have begged them to stop the auction, or face more business closures, downsizings, and ?leakage? to other states.

The Legislative Analyst?s Office said the greenhouse gas auction of allowances is not necessary to achieve the mandates of AB 32, which is to reduce greenhouse gasses to 1990 levels by 2020. California is already showing greenhouse gas emissions reductions to 1992 levels. So many in business facing the very real prospective of having to buy expensive carbon credits just to keep doing business in the state are asking why the auction has to take place.

Windshield washer fluid, smog check program, and ?Clean truck month? were on the agenda Thursday. These issues sound innocuous enough, but not in the hands of the Air Resources Board.

Windshield Washer Fluid regs

In 1990, CARB authorized changes to windshield washer fluid to lower Volatile Organic Compound emissions from the fluid. Initially, they recognized that the changes to the washer fluid would render it useless in freezing temperatures, and allowed the old formula to continue being sold in parts of the state with the colder temperatures.

But over the years since 1990, the Air Resources Board altered the exempted areas, and again lowered the washer-fluid VOC emission requirements four or five times. Ultimately, the washer fluid in the freezing temperature areas was worthless and a safety hazard.

At Thursday?s CARB meeting, after months and months of studies and staff time, CARB had to relax the washer fluid standards so that people living and working in mountainous regions of the state in freezing temperatures could use a washer fluid that actually works and won?t cause crashes.

Smog check program

CARB, together with the Bureau of Automotive Repair, is proposing to change the Smog Check program from the tailpipe emission test, to testing with a car?s onboard computer for emission levels.

Anyone who drives an older car knows the uncomfortable feeling of holding your breath during the tailpipe smog check test, hoping and praying that the car passes.

CARB wants to change the test on cars manufactured in 2000 and newer, to plug in to the car?s computers and read the engine data. They say it will take about three minutes, instead of the 20 minute tailpipe test, and mechanics and technicians can?t cheat to get a passing score for the auto owner.

Cars 1999 and older will still receive the same tailpipe test.

CARB and the Bureau of Automotive Repair also plan to increase the fine for cheating from $2,500 to $5,000 on station owners and technicians. They propose to do this with expensive new computer equipment that stations and mechanics will have to use. And there is an application process with CARB and the automotive repair bureau for the stations which want to be a part of the new program.

The more disturbing part of the presentation was that the CARB staff was very excited about all of the data that can be collected from a car?s onboard computer.

?I think that if we?ve had a hard time convincing the public of a carbon tax, not sure a tax is a good idea,? said CARB Board member James Balmes.

But he was interrupted by CARB Director Mary Nichols before he could finish his thought. ?Hey, congratulations on getting ?carbon tax? back in the discussion,? she said.

Balmes pointed out that most of the poor drive older cars and a tax on emissions would unfairly hurt them.

The discussion led to how new technology would allow CARB to ?track emissions? from cars through the onboard computer. ?Nichols said that finding a way to monitor C02 would be a good project for a grad student.

CARB?s Clean truck month

Nichols then talked about how successful the new diesel regulations have been in forcing truck owners to replace their diesel engines with new ones at a cost of $50,000 to $60,000 each. Truck owner-operators who could not afford to do this have gone out of business.

However, the diesel regulations imposed by CARB were doctored, as I have written about extensively.?Even with this information, CARB forged ahead with the program and killed a great many small businesses.

CARB?s enforcement arm

CARB has now ?partnered? with law enforcement to ensure compliance. The California Highway Patrol has been ordered to pull truck drivers over to run tests on their engines to see if they are complying with CARB?s diesel regulations.

CARB calls this their ?full commitment to compliance.? There was a great deal of talk at the meeting about enforcement and penalties.

Last month, enforcement activities were conducted at CHP inspection stations, border crossings, truck stops, roadside locations, rest stops and port facilities.

Additionally, there was a well-coordinated media campaign orchestrated by CARB. Board members and staff bragged about the 37 news stories done by television news. They even showed clips of a few news stories. These were not public service announcements.

So now we have the California Air Resources Board writing the news, and compliant media reporting it as if it is spontaneous.

The CARB board meeting ended after discussing a resolution to the Cap and Trade program?to cap prices at the level of the price containment reserve.

Dorothy Rothrock, with the California Manufacturers and Technology Association, was the only audience member to speak out vehemently against CARB?s Cap and Trade program.??We are disappointed that CARB is moving forward without fixing the serious flaw of auctioning allowances to raise revenue in the cap and trade program,? she said. ?CARB?s plan to kill manufacturing jobs is not necessary to achieve AB 32 goals. There is still time before the auction for the board to make a firm commitment to provide free allowances for all the compliance periods between now and 2020.?

The?CMTA also explained on its?website:

?The Emissions Market Assessment Committee met in September and identified a few more issues that CARB should resolve before the first auction.? The EMAC economists said that CARB should define what constitutes ?resource shuffling? ? at this time electric power utilities and traders throughout the west do not know what is illegal ?resource shuffling? and what is normal power trading behavior.? Yet CARB?s regulation makes resource shuffling illegal and subject to penalties, also uncertain, starting in January 2013. This isn?t just an academic concern. EMAC said ?uncertain liabilities associated with imports to California could discourage, and therefore raise the cost of, power imports into the state.??

Many say that the price containment reserve will probably not protect companies from high prices, especially in the final years of the program. CMTA is concerned that California could have a market failure similar to the energy crisis of the 1970s, when prices skyrocketed and politicians stepped in to stop the market.

EMAC suggests the price containment reserve should ?be strengthened and clarified before market operations commence.?

L.A. developer ordered to let hikers use trail on his land

A Los Angeles real estate developer must allow hikers to use the popular Hastain Trail across his private property in Franklin Canyon, a judge has tentatively ruled.

Mohamed Hadid, who has designed and built more than a dozen Ritz-Carlton hotels and many Beverly Hills mega-mansions, has been ordered to stop "interfering with the public recreational use" of the trail, which runs across nearly half of the 97 acres he owns next to Franklin Canyon Park between the San Fernando Valley and Beverly Hills.

Tuesday's tentative decision by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Yvette M. Palazuelos directed Hadid and his companies Coldwater Development LLC and Lydda Lud LLC to "remove all items," including fences and equipment, from the portion of the trail that traverses Hadid's land and leads to a peak with sought-after views.

"All of us just felt that it was the right thing that this land should be saved," said Ellen Scott, whose grassroots group Friends of Hastain Trail sued Hadid's companies.

Hadid did not return calls to his cellphone seeking comment. One of his attorneys, Matthew Pahl, said Thursday that he was not ready to comment in detail. "We're naturally disappointed by what it appears the tentative judgment is," Pahl said. "We need to review it a little more before we decide what our next step will be, if there will be one."

In an interview last year, Hadid told The Times that he wanted to build six or seven houses on the ridgeline and envisioned a mix of luxury Mediterranean and contemporary-style homes, structured to blend into the mountainside. He brought in bulldozers, erected barriers and essentially blocked hikers from walking the complete 2.3-mile loop that climbs on a fire road through lush shrub-land to the ridge.

Environmentalists, hikers and mountain bikers argued that the section of trail that crossed Hadid's land had been used by the public for decades. Eric Edmunds, attorney for the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, which joined Scott's group in the lawsuit, said private property could be presumed to be for public use if members of the public had been using it unimpeded for five consecutive years before 1972, when a state law changed the rule.

During the trial, several so-called legacy hikers testified about how their use of the trail went back decades, and, critical to the plaintiffs' argument, preceded the 1972 legal change. James Goller, 55, testified that he had used the trail since he was about 7 years old, hiking with fellow Cub Scouts and having time with his father. Today, he mountain bikes there each morning.

Judge Palazuelos also toured the trail at the request of the plaintiffs' lawyers. Edmunds said he believed the outing was pivotal. "Once she actually saw the trail, once she saw the panoramas and views, she knew right away what was at stake here," Edmunds said.

Jacksonville native Gen. Craig R. McKinley retires after historic career

By Sgt. 1st Class Blair Heusdens

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (October 19, 2012) ? Gen. Craig R. McKinley spent the past 14 years serving in the nation?s capital, but he came back home to Northeast Florida Friday to celebrate his nearly 40-year military career with the people he served with the longest.

?On behalf of all the men and women who make up our National Guard ? about 460,000 nationally ? I?m deeply honored to be back in my home state of Florida and honored to have the commander and chief of the Florida National Guard retire me today,? said McKinley.

Flanked by his friends, family and peers, McKinley received the Governor?s Medal of Merit from Florida Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Cross from The Adjutant General of Florida, Maj. Gen. Emmett R. Titshaw Jr., during a formal retreat ceremony on the parade field of the historic St. Francis Barracks in St. Augustine.

McKinley, a Florida National Guardsman, made history at the beginning of this year when he became the first National Guardsman to serve as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It was not the first time, however, that he set a ?first.? McKinley was also the first National Guardsman to head the National Guard Bureau as a four-star general. He also made history in 1991 when he took command of the Florida National Guard?s Fighter Interceptor Group, becoming the youngest group or wing commander in Florida Air National Guard history.

Paul Still, 125th Fighter Wing Honor Guard recovers the Florida and American flag prior to raising the ceremonial flag which will fly during a retirement and retreat ceremony for General Craig R. The elevation of the Chief of the National Guard Bureau to a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff was a significant step in recognizing the importance of the National Guard to the safety and security of the nation.

?It is a great tribute to the Senate Armed Services Committee for realizing these last 12 years of men and women in the National Guard serving alongside our active components to give us an opportunity to be at the table where decisions are made,? said McKinley.

McKinley received his commission in 1974 as a distinguished graduate of the ROTC program at Southern Methodist University. He joined the Florida National Guard in 1980 as a T-23 and F-106 alert pilot. He has served in numerous assignments in flying and operations, as well as command positions at group, wing, sector and field operating agency levels.

During his celebrated career, McKinley rose through the ranks to prestigious achievements, but it was his 18 years in Florida that formed the foundation for his future successes. Many in the Florida Air National Guard today served and flew alongside McKinley and remember his contributions and legacy in the organization.

?This is an historic day for the Florida National Guard,? said Titshaw. ?We are all very honored and appreciate the fact that General McKinley chose to come back and retire where his heart is and where his root is back in here in Florida.?

Like many who retire after a long and successful career, the day held mixed feelings for McKinley.

?It?s a tough day, it?s a bittersweet moment,? said McKinley. ?But all of us know when we put on the uniform there will come a day when we have to say goodbye. Today?s that day for me and I couldn?t have been more proud to be here.?

Capitol Confidential ? Homebody Hanna Releases First TV Ad

Posted on by Liz Benjamin in Ads, Congress, Republicans

With just 20 days remaining until Election Day, Rep. Richard Hanna has released his first TV ad of the campaign, which protrays him as a hard-working guy who prefers his home in what is now the 22nd Congressional District to being down in D.C.

The spot shows the freshman Republican hard at work, interacting with constituents, driving a car. (You get the picture). It makes no mention of his party affiliation, which is interesting, since he?s one of the more moderate members of the GOP conference ? a fact that surprised some attendees at a recent debate between the congressman and his Democratic opponent, Dan Lamb, a former aide to retiring Rep. Maurice Hinchey.

For example, Hanna is pro-choice, and he raised some eyebrows ? and received national attention ? when he attended a rally for the Equal Rights Amendment?back in March and urged women to contribute their political cash to the Democrats.

The NY-22 battle is not one of New York?s most competitive House races. Hanna has consistently out-fundraised his opponent and is viewed as relatively safe. Still, better safe than sorry, which explains this ad. Here?s the script:

?I?ve worked for you these two years like I?d expect my representative to work for my family: thoughtfully, compassionately working for solutions knowing our future is at stake.?

?So I?m focused on rebuilding our economy, reducing the spending that?s strangling our country, and making sure Medicare is secure. I come home every weekend, listen to you and go back to work. Thank you for the privilege.?

?I?m Richard Hanna and I approve this message.?

The Appropriate Accounting Services Can help Your Business ...

A question often asked by small business owners is, ?What Aurora accounting services does my small business need?? Interestingly enough, the answer is? ?It depends!? Inalmost every instance, a combination of tax, reporting, payroll and general accounting or the ?big three? is needed.

The mixture of those services will be decided by the type of business and the size, as well as predicted future circumstances.

For an extreme example, say your business has recieved word that it will be audited soon, you will without a doubt want to hire a CPA or enrolled agent to have with you and guide you through the audit. Alternatively, you could hire a bookkeeper or tax accountant, though, when facing the IRS you will need your strongest allies with you.

Under more typical circumstances, the size and scope of your business will dictate the services you need. These needs may range from simple quarterly tax assistance and QuickBooks review, to full-blown monthly managerial accounting consulting. Managerial accounting can include the creation of score cards, dashboards, or even daily feedback systems to help you manage your business, profitability and cash flow at a glance.

See why ?it depends??

Zeroing in On What You Need

Often times it makes the most sense to sit down and work together to determine the particular services you will need for your business. From there it is a matter of exploring service level options.

For example, in smaller businesses it is not uncommon for an owner or a spouse to manage the books using QuickBooks. For these businesses, just a small amount of quarterly and year end payroll and tax preparation assistance is all that?s needed.

In larger businesses a person is employed to be a bookkeeper and your accountant?s role shifts to an overseer and a consultant. The staff person will hand things off to the outside accounting service for final review and submission. In these cases the value your accountant brings in terms of managerial guidance can far outweigh the value brought from the accounting functions themselves.

Finally, in some businesses, both small and large, the ideal solution is to completely outsource all of the bookkeeping, tax accounting, and managerial accounting to an outside firm so that value creating employees are focused on the business? core competencies.

No matter which types of services and service levels you ultimately choose, your main goal should be to ensure that you are building your business on solid financial ground.

And that means staying on top of financial information on a regular basis.

Wrapping Up

With the many hats you are probably wearing already it is both practical and wise to consider hiring the services of a professional accounting firm. By allowing a skilled professional accountant to handle some or all of the responsibility of your business? accounting, your overall efficiency improves.

So let?s repeat the question,

?What accounting services does my small business need??

The answer is ?most likely several?. And now you have a better idea of where to begin when choosing those services and service levels for your business.

If you are looking for excellent accounting services in Naperville or a company to take care of your small business accounting in Naperville then this accounting firm must be your 1st call.

Spanish hopes buoy markets ahead of EU summit

LONDON (AP) ? This week's positive momentum in financial markets stuttered Wednesday after fairly downbeat earnings from traditional bellwether stocks IBM and Intel, and as investors awaited a meeting of European leaders.

However, rising speculation that Spain will soon ask for help to keep its borrowing costs down continues to shore up European markets, particularly in Madrid. The surprise decision late Tuesday by Moody's to maintain its credit rating on Spain has also helped shore up sentiment.

Spain's main IBEX index outperformed its counterparts in Europe, closing 2.3 percent higher at 8,128, while the yield on the country's 10-year bond fell 0.3 percentage points to a manageable 5.46 percent.

Elsewhere in Europe, Germany's DAX rose 0.25 percent to 7,394, while the CAC-40 in France was 0.76 percent higher at 3,527. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.7 percent higher at 5,910.

Hopes that the uncertainty over Spain will come to an end soon come a day before EU leaders gather in Brussels, and once again the debt crisis is likely to feature heavy in discussions.

"Markets will be watching the headlines for any signs of progress towards further assistance for Greece or Spain," said Nick Bennenbroek, an analyst at Wells Fargo Bank.

The euro has also been buoyant over the past few days on the back of the rising Spanish speculation. By late afternoon London time, it was trading at $1.3127.

"The euro rebound has accelerated reflecting building investor optimism regarding Spain," said Lee Hardman, a currency analyst at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

Wall Street, however, had slightly more subdued opening after IBM revealed below-forecast revenue in the last quarter and Intel said the usual bounce in sales due to the holiday season is likely to be cut in half this year, partly because of an uncertain global economic recovery.

The Dow Jones industrial average was slightly up, 0.16 percent at 13,475, and the broader S&P 500 index rose 0.3 percent to 1,460.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 stock index closed 1.2 percent higher at 8,86.55 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1 percent to 21,411.64. In mainland China, the main index in Shanghai rose 0.3 percent to 2,105.62.

In the oil markets, a barrel of benchmark New York crude was 14 cents lower at $91.95 a barrel.

Mysterious moon water: Did solar winds create lunar water?

These findings suggest that other airless bodies in the solar system may also possess water on their surfaces, investigators added.

By Charles Q. Choi,?SPACE.com / October 15, 2012

This 2009 image provided by NASA shows the area of the lunar South Pole where the LCROSS experiment, Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, hurtled a spent Centaur rocket into a dark crater and then measured the resulting plume of dust, debris and vapor for evidence of water.

Glass beads within moon rocks suggest that water seen on the lunar surface originates from the solar wind, researchers say.

These findings suggest that other airless bodies in the solar system may also possess water on their surfaces, investigators added.

Arguments raged for years as to whether the?moon harbored frozen water or not. Recent findings confirmed that?water does wet the moon, although its surface remains drier than any desert on Earth.

"With the cost of $25,000 for taking one pint of water to?the moon, it is essential that we develop processes of producing water from the materials on the moon," said the study's lead author, Yang Liu, at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. "This is paramount to human settlement of the moon in the near future." [Gallery: Our Changing Moon]

"This water would be of most value as rocket fuel ? liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen," Liu added. "Until the recent discovery of water in and on the moon, this was going to be a very energy-intensive endeavor to separate these elements from the lunar rocks and soil. Now we have ready sources of water that can be consumed by plants and humans, but also broken up into its constituent elements ? oxygen and hydrogen. Thus, we could use the moon as a jump-board for missions to Mars and beyond."

It remained uncertain where all of this water might come from, although some apparently?came from ice-rich comets. To find out more, scientists analyzed lunar surface dust, or regolith, that astronauts on the Apollo missions brought from the moon.

"Most samples actually come from an Apollo 11 soil collected by Neil Armstrong," Liu told SPACE.com.

Lunar regolith is created by meteoroids and charged particles constantly bombarding lunar rock. The researchers focused on grains of glass in the samples that were created in the heat of countless micrometeoroid impacts on the moon. They reasoned this glass might have captured any water in the regolith before it cooled and solidified.

The investigators found that a large percentage of this glass contained traces of wetness ? between 200 and 300 parts per million of water and the molecule hydroxyl, which is much like water, save that each of its molecules possesses just one hydrogen atom, not two.

To figure out where this water and hydroxyl originated from, the scientists looked at their hydrogen components. Hydrogen atoms come in a variety of isotopes, each with a different number of neutrons in their nuclei ? regular hydrogen has no neutrons, while the isotope known as deuterium has one in each atomic nucleus.

The sun is naturally low in deuterium because its nuclear activity rapidly consumes the isotope. All other objects in the solar system possess relatively high levels of it, remnants of deuterium that existed in the nebula of gas and dust that gave birth to the solar system.

The researchers found that the water and hydroxyl seen in the lunar glass were both low in deuterium. This suggests their hydrogen came from the sun, probably blasted onto the moon via winds of charged particles from the sun, which continuously streams from the sun at a rate of 2.2 billion pounds (1 billion kilograms) per second. The moon, lacking a significant atmosphere or magnetic field, slowly captures all the particles striking it. The hydrogen particles then bonded with oxygen bound in rocks on the lunar surface.

"The origin of surface water on the moon was unclear," Liu said. "We provide robust evidence for a solar wind origin. This finding emphasizes the potential in finding such water on the surface of other similar airless bodies, such as Eros, Deimos, Vesta."

The scientists detailed their findings online Sunday (Oct. 14) in the journal Nature Geoscience.

How far have you ridden? | Mountain Bike Forums

Re: How far have you ridden?

Postby MarcS ? Tue Oct 16, 2012 12:17 pm

That's pretty hard-core guys. I don't think my backside could possibly stand 60 miles of riding in one day--even if were on a flat, smooth road! The furthest distance I've ridden all at once on nothing but singletrack is right around 30 miles. I'm using the term "singletrack" a little loosley here. The trail I rode that day is a National Scenic Trail in the Oregon Cascades. None of the recreation maps of the area indicate that it's rideable; and the sign at the trailhead, although not prohibiting bikes, does warn would-be riders that it is not suitable for MTB. I just had to try, though. Needless to say, it was a gruelling ride over ridiculously rocky, steep terrain. Ironically, the thing that made such a long (for me) ride tolerable was that I was forced to be on my feet as much if not more than on the saddle.

(AP) ? Strong sales of American Girl dolls and Fisher-Price toys helped boost Mattel's third-quarter results, setting the stage for the biggest U.S. toy maker ahead of the critical holiday season.

The results topped Wall Street expectations and sent its shares 4 percent higher in premarket trading. They also indicate how the company is likely to perform during the last three months of the year, when toy makers can earn up to 40 percent of its annual revenue.

This year, retailers including Wal-Mart, Kmart and Toys R Us have beefed up layaway and reservation services to encourage shoppers to buy toys early in the season.

Mattel said its net income was $365.9 million, or $1.04 per share, for the period ended Sept. 30. That's up from $300.8 million, or 86 cents per share, a year ago.

Analysts expected 99 cents per share, according to a poll by FactSet.

Revenue for the El Segundo, Calif.-based company rose 4 percent to $2.08 billion, topping Wall Street's estimate of $2.07 billion.

Fisher Price sales increased 6 percent, while American Girl rose 16 percent. Sales of Hot Wheels were flat, while Barbie declined 4 percent. Mattel reported strong sales of Monster High products, while sales of games tied to the "Cars 2" movie fell.

Sales climbed in North America and abroad, with international results pressured by foreign currency exchange rates.

Cost controls also helped boost gross profit, which improved to 53.7 percent, from 47.8 percent a year ago. Gross profit measures profit after the cost of sales.

Smaller rival Hasbro Inc., which makes Monopoly, Nerf and My Little Pony, reports its results on Monday.

Mattel Inc. also announced Tuesday that its board declared a fourth-quarter dividend of 31 cents per share. The dividend will be paid Dec. 14 to shareholders of record on Nov. 28.

Its shares rose $1.47, or 4.2 percent, to $36.89 in premarket trading. If that holds in regular trading, it would top Mattel's 52-week high of $36.25 set on Sept. 18.

Proven, Common-Sense Wealth Building: Calling Out Money ...

Calling Out Money Magazine's Investment Advice

Lately I?ve been making frequent visits to my daughter Amy?s orthodontist?s office. I?m pretty sure most folks understand why ? she?s thirteen, so of course we?re doing the braces/retainer thing. Personally, her teeth look fine to me, but the professionals say they?re not done yet. So obviously, I?ve got to do what I?ve got to do and go with the flow.

As many parents might do while waiting for their child?s appointment to conclude, I often thumb through one magazine or other from their huge collection, the topics ranging from home & garden to fashion to travel. Most recently, I picked up a copy of Money Magazine. Interesting, isn?t it? This particular issue was from July 2012, the Annual Readers Choice Edition.

Beyond the fact that I would naturally be inclined to pick up that magazine, the back cover said 101 Ways to Build Wealth. Hey, I am always interested in learning and researching new ideas, so I quickly jumped to page 54 and started reading. To my surprise, the very first ? as in, the most important ? point the article made was: ?In achieving wealth, how you invest isn?t nearly as important as how much you save??

That?s a word-for-word quote from page 54 of the July 2012 issue of Money Magazine. Please read it again ? slowly this time.?Now,?everyone obviously has their own opinion, and I?m not even going to attempt to get you to subscribe to mine, but here?s what I?ve always thought about that statement: Seriously? You?ve got to be kidding me, right?

?How you invest? ? that is, the strategy/investments into which you are pouring your hard-earned dollars ? isn?t as important as ?how much? you save? So when you?re pouring your money into a big black hole, so to speak, you should just focus on saving more? With all due respect to the esteemed magazine, they got this one totally backward. I know for a fact that it?s possible for someone who saved a lot less but used a better strategy (the ?how? in this case) to end up with much more money in the end than the one who saved a lot but used the wrong ?how.?

I could go on and on, but I?m pretty certain you get the point I?m trying to make here. I believe that how you?re saving ? the strategy/investments you?re pursuing ??is far more important than how much you save. You can put a whole lot of water into a leaking container, but it?ll be only a matter of time before everything drains out. Meanwhile, if you put a lot less into a leak-proof container, you?d keep everything wouldn?t you?

In fact, I have written and taught about this very point in the past. Here?s one article I wrote for the Maryland Women?s Journal about it.

I even discussed it in my book, 5 Mistakes Your Financial Advisor is Making, beginning on page 50. If you haven?t read the book, I would strongly encourage you to get a copy. You can purchase the e-book for just $2.99, and it?s readable on pretty much all the e-readers, from Apple to Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Sony Reader, and Palm. You can also get it directly from the iBook or Barnes and Noble e-stores. Or if you?re like me and prefer the hard copy, you can buy it here?for just $10.36.

I?d vote for how you invest being far more important than how much. What about you?

California high school considers a ban on a Stephen King book

A California school district committee is debating banning 'Different Seasons,' a story collection by Stephen King.

Rocklin High School is considering banning the story collection because of a passage in one of the stories, titled ?Apt Pupil,? in which one of the main characters, Todd, rapes a woman. The school took the book off library shelves after a parent objected to the scene. A school committee discussed the complaint and ended by deciding to remove the book from circulation.

Rocklin senior Amanda Wong was on the committee and said she was the only one who supported keeping the book in the library and was also the only one who has read the entire short story collection.

?I thought it was completely wrong of them to do that,? Wong told CBS. ?I was really upset? Although I understand this parent?s concerns ? I wouldn?t want my little brother reading this ? I don?t believe it?s the school?s right to take the entire book out of [the] library just over that.?

Wong took her complaint to the school board in Rocklin, and the book was put back in the library while the issue is debated. A district committee will meet about the issue starting tomorrow.

King?s agent told CBS that the author fully supports Wong?s stand.

?We hope she and those who share her views are not disappointed,? the agent told CBS.

Stories in ?Different Seasons? were the basis for the movies ?The Shawshank Redemption? and ?The Stand,? respectively.

Three other books by King, ?Carrie,? ?Cujo? and ?The Dead Zone,? made the list compiled by the American Library Association of the 100 books most frequently challenged in the U.S. from 1990 to 2000, though none of them made the cut for the list of most challenged books between 2000 and 2009.

iPad Mini Battery More Powerful than iPhone 5’s?

MacRumors published a pair of photos of rumored iPad Mini's battery, which is more powerful than the battery of the company's latest smartphone - iPhone 5.

The battery of Apple's new device boasts .72 volts, offering 16.7 Whr of energy on 4490 mAh of charge

MacRumors said that it cannot confirm the authenticity of the part. The markings are consistent with those seen on batteries from other Apple products. The battery's proportions also seem to fit fairly well with what is expected for the iPad mini, although the exact dimensions of the part are unknown.

The 16.7 watt-hour capacity for the iPad mini battery unsurprisingly places the device between the iPhone 5 at 5.45 watt-hours and the third-generation full-size iPad at 42.5 watt-hours.

The battery is clearly not yet an official part of the device that is ready for shipping, as it contains placeholders for several portions of regulatory text and blank rectangular placeholders for a number of regulatory logos. It seems likely, however, that this is the final design simply awaiting final certification.

Reuters claimed that Apple's smaller tablet "iPad Mini" will be released on October 23, which will supposedly be priced to compete with less expensive offerings from Amazon and Google.

Source of Reuters said that Apple is set to unveil a "new product" at a "major" Oct. 23 event, just days before Microsoft is slated to roll out Windows 8 and the Surface tablet.

The iPad Mini is reported to be the new little iPad will feature a 7.85-inch IGZO display with 330 pixels/inch, 1024 x 768 resolution. It will be more affordable. It is also assumed that the new tablet will feature Apple's upcoming operating system, iO6.

Putting iOS 6 in the mini tablet will include a new, Google-free Maps app, and Passbook, and promises better Facebook integration, better maps, and better video conferences that use cellular data, according to Entrepreneur.com. It is also said to have a smaller dock connector and thinner bezel. It may also feature a music service similar to Pandora radio, WiFi, and Retina Display.

Rumors claimed that iPad Mini will cost around US$299 and US$349, which is more expensive than its rivals Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD that starts at US$199.

Physicists Devise Test For Whether the Universe Is a Simulation

Though this often earns the ire of physicists who have not studied their history, the fact is: physics is a specialized and well-developed branch of philosophy.

Unbeknownst to many successful physicists, physics is still replete with metaphysical assumptions, established-but-unprovable positions on classical philosophical problems, and analytical methods built firmly upon a foundation of formal logic. Physics is philosophy through-and-through.

This particular branch of philosophy gets special attention for the direct, highly visible, and wonderfully practical applications of what one learns from its methods. Because of this, people who have not been sufficiently educated in philosophy proper tend to imagine that the two are largely unrelated, and further that the other intellectual elsewheres of philosophy are so much hot air. This is unfortunate, as it winds up imposing unperceived limits on the capabilities of practicing scientists...but the situation has remained workable nonetheless.

Ah, and while I am going around stomping on feet with facts....

The world was discovered. The language we use to model it, mathematics, was invented in response to that discovery. Some interesting logical implications of that language were subsequently discovered. But this does not mean that "mathematics" itself was discovered. It was not. It was invented. Study your history and you can trace its invention and gradual refinement over the course of history.

And also man actually walked on the moon...it wasn't the most colossally-impossible-to-maintain lie in human history.

The vikings discovered America first.

Consciousness is a real phenomenon but the soul is a very high-level abstraction mistaken as a concrete reality.

It's okay to be gay.

K, I'm done.

7 advisers resign at embattled Texas cancer agency

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? At least seven scientists resigned in protest this week from Texas' embattled $3 billion cancer-fighting program, claiming the agency created with the backing of the governor and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong is charting a new "politically-driven" path that puts commercial interests before science.

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas has awarded nearly $700 million in grants since 2009, making Texas home to the nation's biggest pot of cancer-research dollars behind only the federal National Institutes of Health. But how the state agency picks projects has fallen under intensifying scrutiny, beginning in May when its chief scientific officer resigned in protest after it approved ? without scientific review ? a $20 million commercialization project.

Nobel laureate Dr. Phillip Sharp was among those stepping down this week, writing in his resignation letter that the CPRI is making funding decisions that carry a "suspicion of favoritism" in how the state is handing out taxpayer dollars. Dr. Bryan Dynlacht, another reviewer who's leaving, warned that the agency was headed down a path of systematic abuses.

"You may find that it was not worth subverting the entire scientific enterprise ? and my understanding was that the intended goal of CPRIT was to fund the best cancer research in Texas ? on account of this ostensibly new, politically driven, commercialization-based mission," Dynlacht wrote in his letter.

Commercialization projects focus on turning research into drugs or other sellable products rather than funding the research itself.

The letters were obtained by The Associated Press through an open records request. Sharp is professor at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while Dynlacht is at the New York University School of Medicine, wrote in his resignation letter.

In a statement, CPRIT executive director Bill Gimson called the accusations false and misinformed.

CPRIT was created though an ambitious bond measure approved by Texas voters in 2007. The agency has scientists across the country who help review proposals and choose projects to fund.

In May, chief scientific officer Dr. Alfred Gilman resigned in protest after the CPRIT approved a $20 million grant for a so-called incubator project at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The Nobel laureate told colleagues in heated emails that he was trying to prevent misuse of taxpayer dollars and funding decisions based on political considerations.

It was the largest amount of money the agency ever awarded for a single project. But since it was a commercialization project, it didn't undergo scientific review. The agency has since said the project would undergo such a review.

The latest resignations come on the eve of potentially significant changes in how the agency allocates funding. CPRIT has been steering 75 percent of all funding toward research, 15 percent toward commercialization, and 10 percent toward prevention efforts such as breast cancer screenings.

Those funding formulas could change at the agency's annual conference this month. Gimson has signaled that the time has come to put more money into private commercialization projects, saying that would get new drugs into the hands of patients quicker.

Dr. William Kaelin of Harvard Medical School, who served on CPRIT's scientific review council before he stepped down this week, said in his resignation letter that he recently learned two fellow reviewers who rejected the science behind two proposed commercialization projects were asked by state officials to reconsider their low marks. The letter neither cited the reviewers nor the officials.

"In this environment, I am not confident that scientific quality and rigor will triumph over grandiose promised and hucksterism," Kaelin wrote.

Gimson said the final decision on whether to revise scores still rests with each reviewer.

In his statement, Gimson said he wasn't surprised by the latest resignations given Gilman's departure, though he didn't elaborate. A successor has not yet been named.

(AP) ? A fiery tirade against Jews by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's leader highlights one of the foremost diplomatic challenges facing the country's new Islamist President Mohammed Morsi as he balances popular sentiment with the need for security relations with Israel.

The Brotherhood's supreme leader Mohammed Badie called on Muslims worldwide this week to defend Jerusalem, saying "Zionists only know the way of force." He said that Jews were spreading "corruption," had slaughtered Muslims and desecrated holy sites.

Badie's condemnation went well beyond the harsh criticism of Israel and its policies that is common in Egypt, opening even greater friction between the country's most powerful political group and its Jewish neighbor. And it will likely put more pressure on Morsi, who ran for president as a Brotherhood candidate, to take a more assertive role than his predecessor had in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Morsi made no public comments about Badie's remarks, the strongest criticism against Israel since Morsi took office in June. His spokesman, Yasser Ali, did not immediately respond to phone calls seeking comment.

Eli Shaked, a former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, said the Brotherhood's statement was aimed at deflecting attention from Morsi's troubles in his first 100 days in office, from fuel shortages to mounting piles of garbage on the streets.

"Every time there is domestic tension in the new Egypt, Israel and the Jews will be targeted and every time the Egyptian street is tense or protests the Muslim Brotherhood will bring the anti-Semitic genie out of the bottle," he said Saturday.

Israel has increasingly become worried about the ascendance of the formerly repressed Brotherhood to power after last year's ouster of Hosni Mubarak, who was often pictured warmly greeting Israeli officials in Cairo.

The two nations share security concerns about their volatile border area, and both control entry and exit points for the Palestinian Gaza Strip. Islamic militants in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula have carried out attacks this past year against security forces from both countries.

Tensions were stoked last year when the Israeli embassy was ransacked by Egyptian protesters after a cross-border shootout that killed six Egyptian policemen. This summer, 16 Egyptian soldiers were gunned down in Sinai by suspected Islamic militants during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Israeli officials grumbled that Egypt had increased the number of troops there to battle the militants without coordinating the move first with Israeli officials, as the nations' 1979 peace accord stipulates.

Morsi has avoided speaking of Israel in public, only making pledges to respect Egypt's international agreements and the peace accord. The treaty, the first between Israel and an Arab country, has been a foundation for regional stability for more than three decades.

This summer, new tensions arose when Israel said Morsi wrote back to Israeli President Shimon Peres, who had sent the Egyptian president a letter wishing him well on the start of Ramadan. Morsi's office denied sending the message.

The 69-year-old Badie, who served 15 years in prison in his 20s for his Islamist views and was elected to his post in 2010, is the Brotherhood's eighth supreme leader since its founding in 1928. His statement reflects the group's overall position toward Palestinian aspirations for statehood and control of East Jerusalem, a holy site for both Muslims and Jews. He does not have sole authority over group decisions, but presides over the group's top council that vets major issues.

Badie's statement was published on the group's website and emailed to reporters on Thursday, coinciding with the annual Islamic Hajj pilgrimage. Muslims used to pray toward al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem before praying toward Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

"It is time for the Muslim ... to unite for the sake of Jerusalem and Palestine after the Jews have increased the corruption in the world, and shed the blood of (Muslims)," Badie said. The comments were denounced as hate speech by organizations that track anti-Semitism.

Peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians have stalled over Israel's refusal to stop Jewish settlements in the West Bank, which Palestinians claim as their future state.

Gamal Soltan, a political science professor at the American university in Cairo, said the Brotherhood may be playing to a regional audience in evoking the Palestinian crisis.

"Morsi as president, trying to act as a statesman, is responsible for running the country. Badie has more freedom to express views," Soltan said.

Israeli lawmaker Danny Danon called on the United States and the European Union to take action, adding that such "incitement and anti-Semitism in Egypt" must stop before Washington sends more financial aid to Cairo.

"The direction of the new Egyptian government is very worrying and we are following with great concern what is being said and done and what is not being done there against extremists," he said in a telephone interview Saturday.

Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan said Israel's suspected possession of nuclear weapons coupled with wars in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon and "the slaughter of Palestinians and expansion of settlements" means that relations with Egypt cannot be "normal."

Ghozlan insisted the Egyptians would adhere to the terms of the 1979 treaty, "but we are dealing with Israel at the limits of the treaty.

"Improved relations were with the former regime ... against the will of the people, the will of Arab people and the will of Palestinians. Now relations are different."

Beyond religious links to Jerusalem, the Brotherhood inspired the formation of Islamic militant groups around the Middle East, including the Palestinian Hamas. Badie, who was once part of a group of radical members charged with seeking to overthrow Egypt's government, has since renounced violence, but supports Hamas in its "resistance" against Israel and met with Hamas premier Ismail Haniyeh last year in Cairo.

Soltan, the political science professor, warned that the Brotherhood and Morsi cannot continue this "duality" for long.

"They continue to be torn apart between ideology on the one hand and politics on the other," he said. "To survive as a president for Egypt he has to pursue a moderate policy vis-a-vis Israel and there will definitely be people in the Brotherhood who don't like that."
